Thomas Jefferson's Copy of the Koran To Be Used in Congressional Swearing-in Ceremony
Rep.-elect Keith Ellison to Take Oath of Office on Alcoran of Mohammed (1764)

When Rep.-elect Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) takes his individual ceremonial oath of office on Jan. 4, it is to be with one hand upon Thomas Jefferson's copy of the Koran.

Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, requested to take the oath upon Jefferson's personal copy of George Sale’s 1734 translation of the Koran, commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed (London: Hawes, Clarke, Collins and Wilcox, 1764). The two-volume work, which resides in the Library of Congress’ Rare Book and Special Collections Division, is one of nearly 6,500 titles sold to Congress by Jefferson in 1815 to replace the Congressional Library that had been destroyed when the British burned the Capitol during the War of 1812.

"The unparalleled holdings of the Library of Congress reflect Thomas Jefferson’s universal approach to collecting," said Librarian of Congress James H. Billington. "Jefferson believed that there was no subject to which a member of Congress may not have occasion to refer. As the nation's library, and as a symbol of the central role that free access to information plays in a knowledge-based democracy, the Library continues to collect internationally, on all subjects, and in more than 470 languages."

The Library has periodically provided historic bibles and other works from its collections for use in ceremonial occasions.

Sale’s English translation is credited with introducing the West to the Koran. It is the first to have been translated directly from the Arabic to English. Jefferson’s copy was rebound by the Library in 1918.

In 2000, to mark the Library's bicentennial and to honor the role played in its history by the third president, the Library mounted an exhibition titled "Thomas Jefferson," which included a display of his personal library. The exhibition is accessible online at www.loc.gov/exhibits/jefferson/. On the occasion, the Library also launched a worldwide search to locate duplicates of volumes from the personal library of Thomas Jefferson that were destroyed by a second fire in the U.S. Capitol on Christmas eve in 1851. The project was supported by a gift of $1 million from Jerral Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, and other donations from members of the Madison Council, the Library’s private sector advisory group.

Plans are currently underway to publicly display Jefferson’s library in late 2007 when the Library unveils its New Visitors Experience, which will showcase the Thomas Jefferson Building and the Library’s physical and digital resources. Selected volumes from Jefferson's library are periodically on display in the "American Treasures of the Library" exhibition.

According to the holy Bible. Jesus was born to virgin Mary. He was sinless and was nailed on the cross to bear for all of our sin. Whoever believes in Him shall never perish but to live forever.

That's the meaning of Christianity & Christmas.

According to Surah Al Maryam, Mary walked from Jerusalem to Bethlehem after she delivered Isa. This under 10 days old child then speaks out ( a talking child) to proclaim that he is only a prophet and not God. Rather ironic that certain people debated statements from an adult Jesus but accepted the statement from an infant child as the truth.

God knows which is a better religion and why we are born into certain religion...did we chose it? NO!
Why one should think one's faith is better than anothers; if God is who is responsible to our birth into a particular faith. All faiths teach good/positive values. Why not try to be a good what ever faith we belong instead of fighting amongst us who is more correct?
That way peaceful human existence is possible for all. God gave us brains to think..to build the world not destroy it in his name

According to language experts, the real translation for Isa is not Jesus, it is Isiah/ Yesiah.

Good positive values are called positive 'Karma'. Do good to beget Good. Continue the good deeds regardless of race or religion. Do it for yourself and your future generations.

brother and sisters....all religions teach the same thing, believe in a creator(i believe theres one due to the order of universe), do good to urself and to thy neighbours...
all prophets and enlightened healers(Buddha,Gandhi) from the different times were teaching the same thing. You might wanna do as many good as u can and leave the bad outs in this life....
for i have come to believe in the concept of soul reincarnations...for it explains y some people were borned crippled,handicapped,sufferings....etc. God has his own system of justice,if u cannot learn to do things the easy way, God will make u live it the hard way,in this life or next...your body dies, but your souls are eternal. God loves u he wants to transform all of u into something beautiful.

The one and ONLY TRUE GOD IS OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. HE's the ALPHA & The OMEGA. Anyone who pass from this world is answerble to HIM only and no one who has pass off from this world after meeting HIM would be able to come back to warn the rest of this world. We belongs to HIM & HIM ONLY.

All must REPENT and SEEK FORGIVENESS, no matter WHAT!!

Say he is Allah one and only, Allah is absolute has no begin and end. No father and mother no children, does not require any help and there is nothing like him.

PS: How pathetic to say human can be God. Grow up, please.
PPS: Isah (pbuh) is Messenger of God not God.

Supernatural, celestial (or more likely, infernal) terrain is just the place to sort out low IQ differences like religion. Why don't all 'believers' decide to meet as soon as possible in the "afterlife' ( or, indeed aftershave or afterlunch?) by agreeing to commit suicide at their earliest convenience.

I know,I know, a Malay is not allowed to choose the place, time and manner of his death but that, of course is why some Muslims run amok and commit "suicide by cop".

Interesting how a post on religion can stir up so many emotions and opinions..

Perhaps it is wiser (IMHO) to approach it this way - we are all humans...
